SD Zoo & WAP Renewal Membership (Diamond Club Dual Membership for $109.00)

The Diamond Club renewal for a single membership is $109.00, however right now at the renewal site (https://secure3.convio.net/sdzoo/site/Ecommerce?store_id=1941&VIEW_DEFAULT=true&FOLDER=1292&TYPE=&NAME=&JServSessionIdr004=6pcnfxzfs2.app331a) the renewal price for the "Dual Membership is also $109.00".  This membership is for 2 adults in the same household.  Regular price is $139.00.

I think you might be a bit

I think you might be a bit confused about the Diamond membership.  The "single" Diamond membership allows a guest each time the member goes to the zoo, while the Dual Diamond is designed for two persons in the same household.  Therefore, either Diamond membership is esentially a dual membership.  The Single and Dual Diamond memberships have always been the same price.

Before I met Heather I had a single Diamond membership because I thought it might be good for inexpensive dates.  And what did I do?  Married someone who works at the zoo...

Sorry if this post caused

Sorry if this post caused any confusion.  I was renewing my membership and noticed the price difference.  The dual membership was listed at a normal price of $139.00, where the single membership was listed as $109.00.  This difference of $39.00 appeared to be a savings.  Since the SD Zoo and WPA are good photo locations, I thought this would be of interest.

$139.00 is the normal price

$139.00 is the normal price for either the Dual Diamond or the Single Diamond memberships.  The renewal price of $109.00 is the same for both also...

Heather says that, in the long run, the Single Diamond membership is really a better deal, even for a husband and wife.  Put the membership in the name of the person most likely to go to the zoo and the other can come along no questions asked.  And the member can still bring other guests whenever desired.

Now I am confused John. Are

Now I am confused John. Are you saying that if I had a regular Diamond membership I could bring a guest to the zoo anytime I wanted? I have a Dual Diamond membership for my husband and I. That means I can't bring anyone with me as a guest at the zoo because I have a Dual membership? I didn't know about the guest benefit of Diamond club membership and those I know with that membership that I've talked to are not aware of it either.

Since I was a late arrival

Since I was a late arrival to SD... Jamie had a membership and brought me to the zoo whenever I was in town.  The problem was that I could not go by myself or take the baby when she was at work so we changed to the Dual membership.  So if nobody from your house will ever go to the zoo without you then it is a better deal to have the single membership and then you can bring whoever you want.

I hope this helps answer your questions.

With the Dual membership,

With the Dual membership, you have a card and so does your husband.  Because his name is on the card, he is the only one who can use it.  Picture ID is required to be presented along with the membership card at the entrance.

Basically if you have the

Basically if you have the SINGLE Diamond membership, you have one card, with a specific name and that card will state "and one accompanying guest",  That guest is also granted admission to the Skyfari, as long as they are with the member.

The DUAL Diamond membership does not give you the accompanying guest option, as there are TWO cards issued with specific names.

What some people do is place the name of the person most likely to go more, and get the accompanying guest option and can take their spouse or anyone they would like.  The down side to this is that if the person who is named on the card (Say you La Ree) does not or cannot go for any reason, you would have to give your guest a guest pass (you get 4 with either membership) or they would have to pay for a ticket.  What some people do to get around this option, is walk in with the guest, and then leave, while the guest stays in the Zoo and gets a handstamp if they need to leave and return.

For some reason, this pass leads to a lot of questions and misunderstanding.  I have worked in my department for the last 21 years, dealing with some of the issues, and have also covered in the Membership department on and off the last couple of years to assist when they are short handed or need coverage for meetings.

Thank you for clairifying

Thank you for clairifying the issue.

As a long time Zoo member

As a long time Zoo member and contributor, I'd like to suggest two alternatives for those who might be able to afford more than the basic membership:

1. Pick the dual or single diamond membership based on the benefits clarified above, then add $30 to your renewal as a pure contribution to the Zoo's fine work.

2, Consider upgrading to a Keeper's Club membership (not sure how much... $75?) that adds some more free entries and gives you access to Early Hours with a Keeper monthly at the Zoo and Early Hours quarterly at the WAP. I just did this recently. If you want some more "golden hours" photo access, it's a great deal. You can choose to go to the particular program they offer or just wander around before the crowds arrive.

No sale pitch intended... just thought it was worth sharing.
