A Little Extra Reach

I've been using a Kenko 1.4x Tele-extender with my 80-200 AF-D lens for about 5 yrs now and I'm looking into using a TC-17-E II with a 70-200 AF-S VR lens and was wondering if anybody here can speak to the possible down-side of adding that little extra reach. Or should I just save the $$$ and keep using the Kenko 1.4x (fully compatible with 70-200 VR). I know in the final analysis, this will yield ~90mm more in terms of effective Zoom...
Only someone who has tested
Only someone who has tested your specific combination of gear would be able to give you a really good answer. But generally speaking most people are happy with their gear until they try something better and then they wonder how they ever got along before. So basically I'm suggesting you find one to borrow or rent and find out for yourself. I doubt you will consider the reach difference to be all that significant but you may notice a difference in image quality or focus speed. The focus speed may go up OR down because although you will be losing an extra 1/2 stop of light (which should decrease AF performance) you are going to a higher-end product that may just work better.
Good luck...
